Power Conversion Guide

Horsepower & Electrical

Horsepower was defined by James Watt to compare steam engines to horses

1 horsepower = 745.7 watts = 550 foot-pounds per second

Metric horsepower (PS) = 735.5 watts, slightly less than imperial HP

AC power has three types: real (watts), reactive (VAR), and apparent (VA)

Power factor = Real Power ÷ Apparent Power (ideal = 1.0)

Efficiency & Automotive

LED bulbs are 80-90% more efficient than incandescent bulbs

Electric motors can achieve 95%+ efficiency vs 25-30% for gas engines

Engine horsepower is measured at the crankshaft (brake HP)

Wheel horsepower is ~15-20% less due to drivetrain losses

Quick Conversion Tips

Quick conversion: HP × 0.746 = kW, or kW × 1.34 = HP
BTU/h ÷ 3.41 = Watts (approximate)
1 kW = 1.34 HP = 3412 BTU/h = 860 kcal/h
For AC circuits: Watts = Volts × Amps × Power Factor

Human & Biological Power

Average human generates 100-400 watts during exercise

Tour de France cyclists sustain 250-400 watts for hours

Human heart generates about 1.5 watts continuously

Renewable Energy

Solar panels convert ~20% of sunlight to electricity

Wind turbines capture up to 59% of wind's kinetic energy (Betz limit)

Hydroelectric plants can exceed 90% efficiency
